The PME Fathers | ||||||
The Saint Francis Xavier Seminary was the project of the PME Fathers to educate Filipino priests to run the Parishes of Davao. PME stands in French for Pretres de Missions Etrangeres, or Fathers of the Foreign Mission Society. They came to the province of Davao, then comprising the three divisions (Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur). Davao then belonged to the Diocese of Cagayan, under the missionary work of the Jesuit. The PME Fathers came in 1937 upon the invitation of the Bishop del Rosario of the Diocese of Zamboanga.They came straight from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where the main headquarter of the Society is located. In 1987, the PME mission celebrated its 50th anniversary. On this celebration, after 50 years, Davao has become three provinces and four dioceses. Slowly and gradually the PME fathers built and facilitated the introduction of high quality education, Catholic schools, churches, hospitals, communications, and religious congrgations. The PME Fathers, to a large extent, contributed to what Davao Provinces and their people are today. They also contributed to the whole Mindanao when they opened the Regional Major Seminary in 1965. Then slowly and humbly they fade away to give way to the secular and local clergy. However, we, the former seminarians of the Saint Francis Seminary know how much the PME Fathers have touched our lives, and the lives of thousands in Davao and Mindanao. We want to dedicate this Homepage to them. With this we hope the people of Davao will never forget the PME Fathers. These generous sons of Canada will continue to touch the quality life of future generations. In 1921 the Bishops of the Province of Quebec organized the PME Society to realize their commitment to Catholic mission worldwide. By 1925, the Society started sending missionaries to China. However, due to historical events in China, the PME grew its largest contribution in the Philippines and in the Davao. The picture below is the PME House at Santa Ana, at the back of the Holy Cross College and San Pedro Hospital in Davao City. In this house, the PME priests from all over the farflung corners of Davao would come once a week to meet their confreres and to regenerate themselves.(by JP Mercado, April 29,2000).
Note on spelling French names and wordsAs of this writing I don't have yet the technology to spell French words to show accents. I spell them in English alphabets and until I get the technology for French writing.
